The 14th century fort of pokhran lies on the ancient trade route that carried
salt, silks and spices to persia and beyond. It is in the heart of the thar
desert on the jodhpur jaisalmer route and almost like an oasis in the sandy
plains. This fort offers traditional hospitality and shelter that, as history
records, was once offered to the fugitive humayun, mughal emperor in 16th
century. He rested here until he was restored in body and spirit to travel to
persia. The rugged fort has opened its gates to tourists and the descendants of
humayun's hosts go out their way to make the visitors comfortable and memorable.
It has a large collection of rare weapons, paintings historic relics, period
dresses and headgears on display. Pokhran was once famous for its imperial
grouse shoot but today lovers of wildlife can see sand grouse, houbara bustard,
indian gazelle and the great indian bustard. Other interesting events like camel
safaris, camping, village and craft visits and folk music concerts can be
organised.
