The State museum,
established in 1917, has an excellent collection of stone and teracotta
sculptures especially from the Mauryan period. The most outstanding piece is
of course the Didarganj Yakshi. A larger than life voluptuous, female figure
carved from the yellowish sandstone from Chunar, Bihar, the glossy sheen of
the surface is a characteristic feature of the Mauryan school. On View are
toys, icons and mother goddess figures, The bronzes on view include early
Buddist figures , a standing Buddha and Bodhisattvas.
