120 kms from udaipur, dungarpur, the city of hills, is a picturesque town set
amidst the rugged peaks of the aravalli hills. Founded in early 13th century by
rana dungar singh it lies close to Gujarat border a little off the usual tourist
circuit. The juna palace, and udai sagar are main attractions here. The region
of dungarpur and banswara is home to bhils - the tribal aborigines who have
inhabited this region since 2000 b.c.
Its location off the way helped keep its natural beauty intact. Most of the
palaces and other monuments are well preserved and are well worthy of a visit.
The baneshwar fair held every year (January February) is a religious festival
with simple traditional rituals. This fair is one of the largest held in this
region and attracts tribals from the neighbouring states of Madhya Pradesh and
Gujarat. Other interesting visit-worthy places of the region are ambika durga
temple, jai Samudra Lake and chavand. Dungar is ideal for taking excursions to
nearby places of interest like baneshwar, arthuna, kesariyaji, sitamata wildlife
sanctuary and jaisamand.
