120 kms from udaipur, dungarpur, the city of hills, is a picturesque town set amidst the rugged peaks of the aravalli hills. Founded in early 13th century by rana dungar singh it lies close to Gujarat border a little off the usual tourist circuit. The juna palace, and udai sagar are main attractions here. The region of dungarpur and banswara is home to bhils - the tribal aborigines who have inhabited this region since 2000 b.c.
Its location off the way helped keep its natural beauty intact. Most of the palaces and other monuments are well preserved and are well worthy of a visit. The baneshwar fair held every year (January February) is a religious festival with simple traditional rituals. This fair is one of the largest held in this region and attracts tribals from the neighbouring states of Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. Other interesting visit-worthy places of the region are ambika durga temple, jai Samudra Lake and chavand. Dungar is ideal for taking excursions to nearby places of interest like baneshwar, arthuna, kesariyaji, sitamata wildlife sanctuary and jaisamand.

Udai Bilas Palace - Dungrapur

This mid 19th century palace was constructed by maharawal udai singhji overlooking the lovely gaibsagar lake on one side and a private reserve forest on the other. The udai bilas palace was later in 1940 was enlarged by maharawal laxman singh. The " ek thambia mahal " or the one pillared-palace is an interesting edifice with intricately sculptured pillars, panels, ornate balconies, balustrades, bracketed windows, arches, and a fine arrangement of marble carvings.
Three new wings were added around this mahal by laxman singhji. Artistically furnished and lavishly styled rooms here are used by the royal family as well as guests. The banquet hall with its hunting trophies and crystal chandeliers treat the guests to the elegance of the past. Udai bilas is a birdwatcher's paradise as the lake attracts a large number of migratory birds view is possible from the palace itself. Adventure-minded can enjoy boating and trekking .
